How does homeopathy work?
Our bodies have the natural ability to maintain balance. A healthy system reacts to the stresses of everyday life with flexibility and returns to a state of equilibrium easily and effortlessly. When we begin to lose our ability to adapt and stay balanced, the process of dis-easing begins. It is this process that homeopathy addresses. A remedy that matches a person's state will trigger the healing process into action, stimulating the regulating systems of the body to find balance. In this way, illness is addressed on a deep level, rather than just removing the symptoms.
This idea of matching is based on one of the central tenets of homeopathy, the Law of Similars, which dates back to the time of Hippocrates. This states that any substance that causes symptoms in the healthy, will cure the same symptoms in someone who is sick. For example, a person who lays awake at night with speeding thoughts and palpitations may be cured by a homeopathic preparation of coffee. Allergies with burning eyes and copious tears will be given Allium cepa, the homeopathic medicine made from onions. However, this is an oversimplification of the process. Since the approach is holistic, the whole of a person must be considered, including sleep, dreams, temperature and dietary preferences, and any other symptoms that they might be experiencing. Homeopathy is a powerful treatment that can be used to treat both acute illness and long-standing chronic disease. Remedies are taken according to symptoms so it is perfectly suited to conditions that escape conventional medical diagnosis. We often know that our systems are out of balance long before diagnosable illness develops and homeopathy can address concerns at this stage, long before serious pathology appears. Homeopaths believe that we have the innate wisdom to know when our systems are out of balance, and that our bodies, minds and spirits seek balance and healing, and can find it when when provided with the right stimulus. |
